'mood board of Sophie Calles' work'
Sophie Calle is a French writer, photographer, illustration artist and conceptual artist. Her work frequently depicts human vulnerability, and examines identity and intimacy. Her photography work often includes a panel of text to go with it, and her detective like ability to follow strangers or family around and get into their private life is reflected in much of her photography work , mainly evident in her 'The hotel, room 47' exhibition. The exhibition is of a series of black and white photographs that tell a story of someones personal life. She went into hotel rooms and took pictures of what she found for example, clothes, dressing tables, beds and peoples personal belongings. This was to show an insight into their personal and private lives and also to show a track of their lives through showing their belongings and what they have on show for others to see.it gives you an idea about the type of people she associates herself with even though they themselves aren't in the image it shows the kind of person they are. It also gives you a track of their lives through images of their stuff and possessions.
The reason I have chosen Sophie Calle is because she takes images of different, simple objects that reflect a persons personality or represent a persons day. This relates to my question of 'track' because she tracks the day through a series of simple unrefined images. She takes a series of images to portray a routine as well, such as waking up or going to sleep and how different people do simple and every day tasks.

Image Analysis...
Objectively, there is a series of black and white images which are a sequence of someone's belongings and possessions. However, the series of these images could symbolise someone's life and the person they are and what they like doing or what they do day by day. It could also suggest someone's daily journey and daily track of life that person goes through on a daily basis. The black and white effect creates an authentic and vintage feel to the image which suggests the vulnerability in the images of the personal touch throughout Calles work. This is portrayed not only through the black and white effect but also through what she takes pictures of, such as personal and private belongings which all have some meaning to somebody (slippers, bed, jewellery) . The series of images implies a narrative or journey of that persons personality or day. It could be a way of keeping track of events that took place in their day or just a way of expressing who they are as a person with six simple images. The fact that the images are clearly of someone's room which is normally a private and personal place with personal belongings suggests the intimacy of her work and subjectively suggests that the sequence of images could be portraying the journey of someone's life and how they are as a person through what they keep in their room or house. This could be a form of pictorial diary to keep track of their memories or changes in personality over time. It suggests how our lives can be condensed into just 6 materialistic objects.
My responses...
This is an image of the door to the bedroom. It starts to show the track of the journey into someone's bedroom and suggests the person behind the door.
This is an image of the bed side table. This portrays the things kept on the bedside table and suggests a bit about the person who put the things there. It starts to tell the narrative of the person behind the objects.
This is an image of a chest of draws. This portrays the 'keeping track' of personal belongings and showing the track and journey of someone's private life in the form of their possessions.
These are the images I chose to represent the bedroom series. They are simple images which make up the main or important objects and parts of the room.
I then developed the idea of tracking personal belongings, to tracking other peoples personal belongings and seeing what things they class as representing them, or just documenting things around their rooms...
I started with the other rooms around my house and took photos of things that stand out, or things that represent that person such as simple, comforting things or items of clothing…
These are my responses to Sophie Calle's work. I didn't want to do carbon copies of her work however I did want to portray a personality and a narrative throughout a series of images of personal and private belongings, which track a room or person. I took images of focal points in some of the main rooms in my house and tracked the important objects that reflect my personality, or represent the room in a simple set of images. I chose to do the bedroom, the kitchen, and the lounge. Sophie Calle's work takes black and white images of different peoples bedrooms, where as for my responses to her work I will take a series of black and whet images from different rooms of the house and put them together to create a series of images that represent a room or a person or a personality.
